Hand Injury
Hand injuries are common and can range from minor cuts and bruises to severe injuries affecting bones, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. Proper treatment and rehabilitation are crucial to restore function and prevent long-term disability.
Types of Hand Injuries
Cuts and Lacerations:
- Involves skin and possibly deeper structures like tendons, nerves, and blood vessels.
Fractures:
- Breaks in the bones of the hand, including the fingers, metacarpals, and wrist.
Dislocations:
- Bones in the hand or fingers are forced out of their normal positions.
Tendon Injuries:
- Damage to the tendons that control finger and hand movements, such as flexor and extensor tendons.
Nerve Injuries:
- Damage to nerves that can cause loss of sensation, movement, or function.
Burns:
- Thermal, chemical, or electrical burns affecting the skin and deeper tissues.
Immediate Treatment
First Aid:
- Clean cuts and cover with sterile bandages.
- Apply pressure to stop bleeding.
- Immobilize fractures and dislocations with a splint or sling.
- Cool burns with cold water and cover with clean, non-stick dressings.
- Elevate the injured hand to reduce swelling.
Seek Medical Attention:
- For severe cuts, fractures, dislocations, tendon or nerve injuries, burns, crush injuries, infections, and amputations.
Recovery
-
Initial Recovery:
Depends on the severity of the injury and the treatment required.
Pain, swelling, and limited mobility are common initially. -
Healing:
Fractures typically take 6-8 weeks to heal.
Tendon and nerve injuries may take several months for full recovery. -
Rehabilitation:
Exercises and therapy to regain strength, flexibility, and function.
Ongoing assessment to monitor progress and adjust treatment.
Risks
- Infection, poor healing, stiffness, chronic pain, loss of function, and complications from surgery.
