Post Burn Deformities
Post-burn deformities refer to physical abnormalities or changes in appearance that occur after a severe burn injury has healed. These deformities can result from damage to skin, underlying tissues, and structures like muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Managing and correcting these deformities often require specialized medical care, surgical intervention, and rehabilitation to improve function and aesthetic outcomes.
Types of Post-Burn Deformities
Contractures:
- Description: Tightening and shortening of skin, muscles, or tendons near the burn site. This can restrict movement and lead to joint stiffness.
- Causes: Scar tissue formation during healing, pulling surrounding tissues together.
Scar Formation:
- Hypertrophic Scars: Thick, raised scars that may be red or purple in color. They remain within the boundaries of the original burn injury.
- Keloids: Overgrowth of scar tissue that extends beyond the boundaries of the original burn injury. Keloids can be itchy, painful, and cosmetically disfiguring.
Loss of Function:
- Muscle and Joint Function: Impairment due to contractures or damage to nerves and blood vessels.
- Sensory Changes: Altered sensation (e.g., numbness, hypersensitivity) around the burn area.
Management and Treatment
Early Intervention:
- Burn Wound Care: Optimal wound care during the acute phase to minimize scar formation and promote healing.
- Pressure Garments: Wearing specially fitted garments to apply pressure and prevent hypertrophic scar formation.
Surgical Interventions:
- Contracture Release: Surgical procedures to release tight bands of scar tissue, allowing for improved movement and function.
- Scar Revision: Techniques to improve the appearance of scars, such as excision, skin grafting, or laser therapy.
- Reconstructive Surgery: Restoring function and aesthetics through procedures like tissue expansion, flap surgery, or microsurgery.
Physical and Occupational Therapy:
- Range of Motion Exercises: Stretching and strengthening exercises to improve joint flexibility and prevent contractures.
- Functional Training: Techniques to regain independence in daily activities and improve quality of life.

His very soft spoken, he really treats the patients and family well. He understands the problem of patients. Not just treats them but follows up with them. He makes sure he can do his best and provide his best when under his care. He has saved my life. The best doctor I would recommend it any one wants a plastic surgeon
